All Steel 1285, 1303

Courtesy of Trevor Anderson we have a Goodell “All Steel” 1285 (with 28 x 5 Atkins backsaw) or 1303 (without saw) box circa 1920’s. There is residual black paint, rivets can be faintly discerned on the frame, and it has a quadrant marked in degrees only. It appears to be complete with stock guides and seems as solid today as the day it was made.

The accompanying slides clearly illustrate Goodell’s “truss” structure for the miter box frame. Observe how the frame is made from many small parts, all riveted together.

Trevor has also provided the following component measurements:

  • the feet are 1 3/4″ tall
  • the rectangular frame on which the workpiece sits is 21 1/8″ long  x  4″ wide  x 13/16″ tall
  • the bar stock that the saw support assembly sits on is 12 1/8″ long x 1 1/8″ wide
  • the barrels that hold the saw guides are 5 1/2″ tall (total length) and are an 1 1/8″ in diameter
  • the saw guides are 8 1/2″ long and are 5/8″ in diameter
  • the back fence is made from a 4 3/4″ by 20 1/4″ piece of corrugated metal. Measured from the front the fence projects 3 1/2″ above the wood that is being cut
