#72 “Improved Langdon Acme” (ca. 1912)

Here are some photos of a circa 1912 crate that the Millers Falls Company used for shipping a miter box to a retailer or customer. The miter box shown in the photo is a #72. This particular wooden crate is reported to be 33-1/4 inches long, 11 inches deep, and 8 inches high and appears to be made from knotty eastern white pine. The overall length of the saw in the photo is 28-5/8 inches.

The parts listing shown on the underside of the lid, which is largely illegible in the photo that we received, is said by the contributor to state in part: “The Mitre box is marked “Z” with a replacement cost of $1.50. The swing arm lever is marked “NX” with a replacement cost of $1.10. The sliding front post which has the identification plate attached is marked “NS” with a replacement cost of .50 cents.” That information, plus the “Langdon Acme Improved” wording that can be made out from the photo, correlates exactly to pp. 142-143 of the 1912 Millers Falls product catalog.

The stenciled lettering on one end of the box, which states the town of Millers Falls, MA as the company’s address, would offer secondary confirmation of the box’s date of origin as the company was headquartered there until 1931.
